Proverbs 30:5-6 (NIV) Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
We are nearing the end of our summer series focused on Proverbs, and God’s wisdom merged with our real lives. This Sunday we are coming into what I consider one of the most important proverbs, all about the wisdom of God’s Word.
To shape your mind in preparation for Sunday, consider these questions:
- Who do you listen to?
- What do you follow?
- What feeds have you set up on your phone or computer?
- What news do you tune in to?
These are very important questions that you need to answer. Why? Because these items truly shape your mind. They shape the way you deal with life. They shape your responses to crisis. They shape the way you spend leisure time. Here’s a cold, hard fact: the information that you allow to move into your mind, then move into your heart, will always literally mold the way you do everything—parenting, marriage, money, leisure, sexual conduct, the language you use, what you watch, how you react in temperament…everything!
The pithy statement in Proverbs 30:5-6 jumps out to me as one of the most critical in all the Proverbs. Don’t forget, Proverbs begins with several similar statements, such as, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10).
Let that statement wash over your heart. If we are going to know anything of real substance—if we are going to be wise in the way we handle anything that comes our way—we must know the Holy God! We can only know the Holy God by listening to him through his Word!
This is where Proverbs 30:5-6 comes in. We are helpless and blind without spending our lives in his Word.
As you prepare for Sunday morning, I would ask that you read the following passages and begin contemplating how important God’s Word is in your life.
On Sunday morning, I will have a document for you that is intended to be a guide on how to let the Word of God—the Bible—become as much a part of your life as having dinner every day. I will share a sermon on this topic, along with some questions and challenges for small group discussion, followed by some ways you can learn to listen to God’s Word far above any other messages out there.
See you Sunday morning.
