A huge thank you to our guest speaker for the last couple of Sunday’s, Scott Brewer. If you did not get a chance to be at the services, you can listen to those messages via our website. Scott spoke to us out of his years of experience on how to grow strong with a consistent prayer life. This week Alvin and I have also led what we are calling a “LifeWay Prayer Lab” where we have laid out some practical tools to learn to put your prayer life into practice. Some of the documents from this lab will be available on Sunday if you missed that as well.
Now… this coming Sunday, June 18th, not only is it Fathers Day, but we will be laying out the second of the seven Spiritual Habits, and that is Growing in the Discipline of reading God’s Word. If I were to ask you to list out the top regular habits in your Christian life you probably would say — Number 1 is prayer – and Number 2 is reading your Bible! These are no real surprises, right? But I cannot stress to you how these first two Spiritual Habits lay a foundation for growing to be a strong follower of Christ for the rest of your life. I look forward to the next two Sunday’s as we examine how to go about developing the discipline of reading God’s Word regularly. When it comes to reading your Bible regularly, you can learn the habit as a young child, but you can never get to the bottom of the depth of God’s Word no matter how long you live. You have heard me say many times that reading other books can be helpful, but NOTHING replaces that never ending opening, reading, ruminating, contemplating, and digesting God’s Word in Scripture.
Our youth minister of old (Kevin Perry) used to quote someone that I find to be a great truth. If you want to hear God speak, read the Bible. If you want to hear God speak out loud, read your Bible out loud! I like that.
See you this Sunday at 10am as we take on the second of the seven Spiritual Habits. We will also be offering the next Spiritual Habits Lab on reading God’s Word on Wednesday June 26.
