This Sunday, September 11, we are launching into our third year of study and sermons to help us grasp the whole of Scripture. To remind you…
Year 1 (2020-21) — The Book of Jesus
We explored the idea that ALL of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, is ultimately about Jesus and God’s rescue plan.
Do you remember our memory verse?
Colossians 1:15
Christ, the visible image of the invisible God...
Year 2 (2021-22) — Building His Church
We sought to learn how Christ passed on to us, his Body, the mission of sharing the work of Jesus in this broken world.
Do you remember our memory verse?
1 Corinthians 12:27
You are the Body of Christ, and each one a member of it.
NOW:
Year 3 (September 2022 – May 2023) — Knowing God
Knowing God, Chapter 1: The Great I Am
Memory verse:
Exodus 3:14 “I AM WHO I AM.”
How can you prepare for this series—and where is it leading us?
We will begin in the book of Exodus, focusing specifically this weekend on Exodus 3 and Moses’ encounter with God at the burning bush.
First of all, read Exodus 3 a few times. In addition, take the time to carefully and slowly read Exodus 3:14-15 and pore over the critical phrases:
- I AM WHO I AM.
- I am the God of your fathers.
- I am to be remembered from generation to generation.
This message, within the theme of knowing God, will launch the whole school-year-long series.
Why this study?
We are great at deciding what our lives should look like, and we are even better at shaping what our God ought to look like. Knowing who God is (and who he is NOT) shapes everything about us. This is critical: our perception of God—our shaping of who God is, the image we have of God—can either be eternally life-transforming, or it can be life-threatening, dangerous, and even deadly. Moses found this out almost 3500 years ago when he had the encounter with God at the burning bush, and it can happen to us today.
Humanity has always tried to shape God into the image that works best for us. As the people of God, we do NOT have that option. Essentially this is our study for the year, and we will start where Moses started: at the burning bush in the desert.
A Heads-up
I am going to be challenging us this Sunday with a specific reading plan for the year. I will also lay out the different “chapters” (sub-themes) of this year’s series—all with the purpose of learning and applying what it means to KNOW GOD, the Great I AM.
See you Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
