Psalm 127
Last week I told you I wanted to share a few weeks of personal devotion time with you—not to show you what I have learned while reading the Bible, but to encourage each of us to learn how to have our own personal time with God, letting him speak to you.
As an example this week, here is a simple devotional that I had a few days ago, and what God showed me.
Psalm 127:1
”Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do not good.” (NLT)
God is always at work. Whether I look closely or at a distance, I may see something—whether I look through a microscope or a telescope, I can see that God is at work. What I sometimes struggle to see is the good that comes out of my work, my time, my energy, my days. In the very short Psalm 127, God communicates to me that he is always at work—and if I live a life dedicated to him, my work will find meaning. I will find reward in the work of my hands. Now, I may not see results right away. I may finish a day, a week, even a year of labor and wonder if anything of real, lasting value came out of it. But if at the beginning and ending of every day I simply say to God, “Please take the labor of my hands and the steps of my day, and use them in any way you want,” then no day is wasted. No time is squandered. No energy is fruitless.
God in his sovereignty knows what he is doing, and he will take anything dedicated to him and make it fruitful. I may not have full view of it all immediately, but over time I will look back and see with amazement how God used any and every circumstance for his glory.
That’s how I want to invest my life.
Blessings to you as you explore God’s Word and develop your own habit of letting God speak to you.
