Do you remember when was the first time you heard about the Ten Commandments? Was it during dinner one day you sat down with your family? Was it in a conversation with a friend? Was it during children Sunday school? When I first heard about them, I was so little I don’t even remember how old I was. God writing some things on stone tablets must have fascinated me. The Ten Commandments are well known not just to Christians, but the whole world. Everyone has at least heard of the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are so famous they even made a movie with that title back in 1956.
But not all people know there were not only ten commandments. God did not give only ten to Israel. He gave much more than that. As a matter of fact, God gave a total of 613 commandments to Israel, of which the first ten are known to you and me as the Ten Commandments. In other words, the Ten Commandments should have been called the “613 Commandments”. Nevertheless, 613 is many commandments. Not all 613 commandments are found in Exodus. The rest are spread throughout Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
Last Sunday, Billy taught us the first four commandments of the Ten Commandments. This week, we focus on the last six. What is the relationship between the last six commandments and the first four commandments? More importantly, how do they relate to our current message theme: Knowing God? Which is to say, why is it necessary to know the Ten Commandments if we want to know who God is? Come, let’s think together this Sunday and worship together. See you there!
